POT asks Chamber heads dismissal

Published on

The Party of Young People (POT) is requesting the dismissal of the presidents of both Chambers of Parliament, Ilie Bolojan and Ciprian Serban, arguing that they intentionally blocked the procedure for the suspension of the head of state.

„Twice in a row, Ilie Bolojan and Ciprian Serban used invented pretexts and procedural tricks to submit to the joint Standing Bureau the initiative to suspend citizen Iohannis, a POT initiative supported by the entire opposition, thus violating the Parliament’s Regulations and undermining fundamental democratic principles. If the procedure had not been fulfilled on our part, they should have informed us in writing accordingly. Instead, they invented this vote in the Standing Bureau to block the initiative from being brought to the plenary for a vote. This attitude defies the will of the Romanian people and the constitutional right of Parliament to exercise its control over the Presidency,” POT chairperson Anamaria Gavrila is quoted as saying in a press release sent to AGERPRES on Monday.

She said that „Parliament cannot be an annex of the Cotroceni Palace,” pointing out that „the Presidents of the two Chambers have demonstrated that they are more concerned with defending the interests of citizen Iohannis than respecting the rules of the institution they lead.”

„For this reason, we request their dismissal from office and the restoration of a real democratic framework in Parliament,” Anamaria Gavrila added.

POT urges all responsible political forces to support this request and ensure that Parliament remains a forum for democratic debate and decision-making, not an instrument of institutional blockage, according to the aforementioned press release.

The Party of Young People announced last Wednesday that it had resubmitted the request and signatures for the suspension of President Klaus Iohannis to the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, after this request had been rejected twice in the Standing Bureau, due to procedural reasons.
