The Young People’s Party (POT) announced on Monday that it is initiating the procedure to remove Senator Ilie Bolojan from the position of Senate head and implicitly of acting president of Romania, arguing that he „has become a threat to national security”.
According to POT Chair Anamaria Gavrila, Bolojan has „seriously” overstepped his powers as acting president, making decisions on Romania’s behalf that do not have the Romanians’ support.
„This move is the consequence of serious abuses and anti-democratic slippages. Bolojan is overstepping his powers as acting president and is illegitimately involving Romania in decisions that deal with national security. He has no right to decide without the support of Romanians to increase defense costs and increase armament stocks. All these vital decisions for the Romanian state must be in coordination with Romania’s strategic partner, the U.S., represented by the Trump administration. Any military action taken by Bolojan that runs counter to Washington’s line can throw us into a national security conflict with irrevocable repercussions,” Gavrila said, as cited in the release.
She argues that „the Romanians have proven in the streets on Saturday that they want to align with and respect the diplomatic line between Bucharest and Washington”, whereas through his decisions, „Bolojan does nothing but trample on the Romanians’ desires.”
„Another serious deviation from the proper national security conduct is Bolojan’s refusal to recall Romania’s ambassador to the U.S. Andrei Muraru, who tried to involve Romania into a foreign conflict through his statements against the Trump administration. Another ground for the removal initiative is related to Ilie Bolojan’s abusive attempt to block the suspension of Klaus Werner Iohannis from the position of president in the two Houses’ Standing Bureaus, in serious violation of the regulations,” Anamaria Gavrila mentions.
The POT leader added that „not even now has Bolojan explained the Romanians the abusive and undemocratic decision to annul the presidential election and the Romanians’ vote in the first round.”
„Having in view that Ilie Bolojan does not keep his word even towards his coalition partners, as he initially declared his support for Crin Antonescu only to later appear to campaign for himself, how could we expect him to keep his word towards the Romanians? For all these reasons, POT initiates the procedure to remove Ilie Bolojan from office in order to free Romania from a real threat to national security,” Anamaria Gavrila concludes.
