POT leader: Venice Commission shows AEP, not Constitutional Court competent for election cancellation

Published on

Chairwoman of the Young People’s Party (POT) Anamaria Gavrila said that the Venice Commission’s report released on Monday regarding the cancellation of Romania’s presidential election shows that the competent authority for making such a decision is not the Constitutional Court of Romania, but the Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP).

„One must fight to the end in the name of justice. The Venice Commission has proven the Romanians right. Give us round two back! The Venice Commission report confirms everything the Romanians have repeatedly maintained: the second presidential round must be resumed. A particularly important point of the report emphasizes the need for an institution where the election cancellation decision can be appealed. In Romania there is no authority where to challenge such an abusive measure. The report also specifies that it is not the Constitutional Court of Romania that had the legitimacy to make a decision of such magnitude, but the Permanent Electoral Authority,” Gavrila said, as cited in a statement.

According to the POT leader, the party „will continue to fight for the Romanians’ right to choose their leader.”

„Even when society condemns you, when directly vested actors attempt to discredit you, you still have a duty to fight for the truth. The Venice Commission proved us right. Romanians want the second round back and they have every right to demand it,” Gavrila mentioned.
