Predoiu, at inauguration of new headquarters of Ilfov Immigration Service: A stage meant to meet security requirements

Published on

The inauguration of the new headquarters of the Ilfov Immigration Service represents a stage in a broad and coherent policy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs – carried out through the General Inspectorate for Immigration – aimed at responding to both the needs of the national economy and security requirements, declared the Minister of Internal Affairs, Catalin Predoiu, who participated in the inauguration ceremony of the headquarters, in the Grand Arena Mall area.

He pointed out that it is in the interest of Romanian citizens that the process of granting the right to temporary residence or work visas be carried out in the best, most efficient and safe conditions, and this indirectly contributes to ensuring a secure framework for all citizens.

„This is a modern workplace, both from a logistical point of view – including the digitalization of processes – and from a procedural and operational efficiency point of view. In recent years, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has made important modernizations in terms of public relations and the digitalization of services addressed to citizens,” said Predoiu.

He showed that this opening is part of an institutional response to a new, profoundly changed reality, with challenges of a different complexity than the one faced 5, 10 or 20 years ago in the field of regulating the legal stay of foreign citizens on Romanian territory.

„If a few years ago only a few thousand temporary residence permits were granted annually, today we are talking about over 230,000 foreign citizens with the right to temporary residence in Romania – an exponential increase in the volume of activity. More specifically, between January 1, 2024 and May 31, 2025, the Ilfov Immigration Service alone received approximately 12,000 applications for work permits, issued 9,800 permits and processed 22,000 requests for extension of the right to temporary residence. Approximately 29,000 foreign citizens live and work in Ilfov County,” Predoiu specified.

The minister added that, in the context of Romania’s accession to the Schengen area, the procedural framework and related challenges have changed considerably.

„Today we are faced with new realities that did not exist a decade or two ago. Therefore, it is essential to find a fair balance between the need to respond to the ever-increasing demand for labor and the fundamental obligation to ensure the safety of citizens and communities,” said the Minister of Internal Affairs.

„Located in a modern and accessible space in the Grand Arena Mall area, the new headquarters responds to the growing needs generated by the demographic and economic dynamics of Ilfov County, managing a significant number of requests for legal migration. The event emphasized the importance of the balance between openness, legality and security, and reaffirmed the authorities’ commitment to an efficient, transparent and citizen-oriented administration,” informs a press release from the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
