Romania has constantly proved its solidarity in major humanitarian crises, offering concrete support to refugees from war zones, Romania’s caretaker Prime Minister Catalin Predoiu said in a message on Friday, June 20, World Refugee Day.
„World Refugee Day invites us to reflect on the suffering and courage of tens of millions of people around the world who, due to wars and persecution for ethnic, political or other reasons, have been forced to leave their homes and home countries in order to save their lives and dignity. Refuge is a last hope, a fundamental right that guarantees safety and recognition of the dignity of every human being,” said Predoiu.
With empathy and humanity, the Romanian society offers those fleeing war a hance for a better life, peace and freedom.
„In the crisis triggered by the war in Ukraine, the Romanian authorities and citizens acted promptly and altruistically. The Romanian state and civil society, in a joint effort, provided immediate support – transport, food, shelter, medical assistance – and the refugees were offered real chances of integration: access to jobs, education and healthcare services, Romanian language courses, professional mediation services and simplified recognition of qualifications. These efforts were supported by a strengthened legislative framework and funds from the national and European budget, international support and donations.”
An important moment was the passage in June 2022, of the National Plan of Measures for the Protection and Integration of Refugees from Ukraine – a strategic instrument that covers the diverse needs of refugees, including those in situations of vulnerability or at risk of abuse, exploitation or social exclusion.
Predoiu added that Romania has become an example for the international community, due to its balanced and comprehensive response that combined emergency management with consistent measures for the integration of refugees.
„On behalf of the Romanian government, I reaffirm our firm commitment to respecting human dignity, supporting the integration of those forced to leave their country and consolidating a supportive and empathetic society. I wish all refugees to live in peace, dignity and safety!” Predoiu said.
