President Nicușor Dan says he will designate a new prime minister by next week at the latest, before leaving to attend the UN General Assembly. The head of state says he will hold consultations with the parties this week and choose the candidate with the best chance of securing the 233 votes needed in Parliament.
According to sources, consultations will most likely take place at Cotroceni on Wednesday. The options on the president’s table, the sources say, are Sorin Grindeanu, Siegfried Mureșan and Alexandru Nazare.
The president said, in an interview given to Euronews Romania, that he would most likely designate a prime minister before next week.
“We need to see whether it can secure a majority; likewise, with the other options put forward in the public domain, we need to see whether they stand a chance of securing a majority in talks with the parties before the nomination. And I will make the designation in favour of the option with the best chance of securing a majority. (question: Will you hold official consultations again this week?) I would like to do that, and I would also like to make this designation,” Nicușor Dan said.
“I had expected greater willingness to engage in dialogue at the start of the parliamentary session (…) We cannot wait any longer and a designation will follow. Let us see what happens as a result of the designation,” Nicuşor Dan said.
Asked whether he would make the designation before attending next week’s UN General Assembly, he suggested that he would prefer this option.
