President Nicusor Dan on Thursday stated that it would be best to form a Government with a political prime minister, claiming that a technocratic prime minister has no authority over politicians.
„For now, I also believe that it is best, and this is the main option, to have a Government that wants to work for three and a half years and with a political prime minister. (…) For the moment there are discussions, I do not rule out anything, but I do not think that it is the right option [to have a technocratic PM – editor’s note], because a technocratic prime minister has no authority over politicians,” said Nicusor Dan, in a statement to the journalists gathered in front of the house where he lives.
He specified that several ideas were formulated during the informal consultations on Wednesday at the Cotroceni Palace and each of the political parties present understood that budget cuts are needed.
„Each of them understood that we need to make budget cuts, including cuts in state spending, and we agreed that two people from each party would start working today, and at this moment I have the big data. The big question is how strong is the political commitment to cutting spending, and at least at this point, my impression is that the parties understood very well and want us to cut,” the head of state said.
President Nicusor Dan held informal consultations with the parties and parliamentary groups on Wednesday on the economic and political situation of the country.
The Presidential Administration informed that, at the initiative of president Nicusor Dan, it was agreed that, in parallel with the negotiations for the creation of the new Government, a plan of measures to reduce public spending will also be developed, to be assumed and implemented by the future Executive.
A technical working group formed by PSD (Social Democratic Party), PNL (National Liberal Party), USR (Save Romania Union), UDMR (Democratic Union of Hungarians of Romania) and representatives of the national minorities will have its first meeting on Thursday, at 3:00 pm, at the Cotroceni Palace. Radu Burnete and Dragos Anastasiu will participate in the meetings of this working group on behalf of the Presidential Administration.
