President Dan: Romania does not need exceptions undermining the general effort of economic recovery

Published on

Romania now needs clear, stable and fair rules, not exceptions introduced in a hurry that undermine the general effort of economic recovery, President Nicusor Dan said on Wednesday.

He sent back to Parliament a law that would have cancelled one of the fiscal measures recently taken by the government to narrow the budget deficit.

„In recent months, the Romanian state has made great efforts to balance the budget: tax incentives have been eliminated, additional taxes have been introduced where needed, and real efforts have been requested from citizens and companies. One of these measures was to increase the tax from 10% to 16% on income from cryptocurrency transactions,” the head of state said.

He added that the law that recently reached promulgation introduced, through an amendment brought to the decision-making chamber, a temporary exemption for this income „exactly during the period in which we are striving to make the tax system fairer and more sustainable”.

„I asked for the re-examination of the law precisely because it is not fair that, while the majority of citizens pay taxes, certain gains, some of them very high, should be treated preferentially, even more so without a clear analysis of the budgetary impact and without a consistent vision on the fiscal policy.”.

Dan on Wednesday sent to Parliament a request for the re-examination of the Law approving Government Emergency Ordinance 107/2024 regarding the provisions introduced in Article II, which grants a temporary exemption from the payment of income tax for the gains derived from trades with virtual currencies.

According to the Presidential Administration, the head of state considers that the law, in the current form passed by Parliament, contravenes the principles of fiscal equity and the commitments of the Romanian state under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), Component 8 – Tax Reform.
