World leaders congratulated Nicusor Dan in the wake of his presidential win, including President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu and President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola.

The Moldovan head of state spoke on the phone with Romania’s President-elect, congratulating him for earning the trust of his fellow nationals, reports a release issued on Monday by the Information and Media Communication Department of the Presidency of the Republic of Moldova.

Also, President Maia Sandu told the future head of the Romanian state that he can count on the Republic of Moldova.

„I am convinced that we will continue to strengthen the strong bridges between Chisinau and Bucharest for a safe, free and prosperous future for the people on both banks of the Prut,” the Moldovan president said.

This is Maia Sandu’s second message to Nicusor Dan in less than 24 hours after the one on Sunday evening, in which she congratulated him and reiterated that the two neighboring states are walking together „the European path”.

„Congratulations, Romania! Congratulations, Nicusor Dan! Romania, we walk together with confidence on the European path! The Republic of Moldova and Romania rely on each other – both in good and in bad times,” Sandu wrote on Facebook on Sunday evening.

She thanked the „Moldovans with Romanian citizenship at home and around the world” who voted in the ballot, for making „their voice strong for freedom and democracy and their impressive participation in the election.”

„The whole world sees what power we have when we are united,” said Sandu.

In her turn, President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola spoke on the phone with Nicusor Dan to congratulate him on his victory.

In a message posted on X on Monday afternoon, Metsola said that „it was great speaking with Nicusor Dan” and that „Following the election result announcement, it was moving to see all the European flags being proudly waved across the country.”

„The people of Romania can rely on their Europe. That’s the message I will take to Romania later this week,” the EP President added.

Roberta Metsola will receive on Thursday, May 22 the Timisoara Award for European Values for supporting Romania’s entry to the Schengen Area and for her constant support for Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, the organizers said.

Metsola also sent Nicusor Dan a congratulatory message during the night, posting on X in Romanian and English.

„Congratulations, Nicusor Dan! I know that under your leadership Romania will go from strength to strength and will keep shaping our Europe. Looking forward to working together for a smarter, stronger and safer Europe,” Metsola wrote in her first message.

According to the final data centralized by the Central Electoral Bureau, independent candidate Nicusor Dan won the presidential runoff with 6,168,642 votes (53.60%), while his opponent, AUR leader George Simion garnered 5,339,053 votes (46.40%). As many as 11,641,999 people representing 64.72% of the total number of enfranchised voters turned out to the polls.
