President Nicusor Dan declared on Friday that he congratulated the authorities for bringing mercenary Horatiu Potra back to the country, noting that he had received full information about everything that happened on the evening when last year’s presidential elections were canceled and in the immediately following days, while Potra was in the country, and that all this information will be made public.
„It’s good that this happened, and it happened quickly, and I congratulated the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of the Interior yesterday. This means that the institutions are vigilant on this issue,” said Nicusor Dan.
Asked about Potra’s collaboration with Calin Georgescu, the president said that he was informed on all the events surrounding the election’s cancellation and the following days while Potra was in the country. He added that it is important for state institutions to consolidate information rather than release fragments, promising that details will be made available soon.
Mercenary Horatiu Potra was brought to the country on Thursday from Dubai, together with his son Dorian Potra and his nephew Alexandru Cosmin Potra. The three had been put on international wanted list after they left Romania at the beginning of this year. In September, they were detained in the United Arab Emirates, and Romanian authorities initiated extradition procedures.
Potra was recently sent to trial by the Prosecutor General’s Office for attempted actions against the constitutional order, failure to comply with the weapons and ammunition regime, failure to comply with the explosives regime, unauthorized operations with pyrotechnic items and public incitement to violence – together with 20 other mercenaries from his group, in the same case in which former presidential candidate Calin Georgescu is being tried.
Prosecutors argue that Potra and his group of mercenaries intended to infiltrate the protests organized immediately after the cancellation of the December 2024 election in order to create chaos.
The action plan was allegedly masterminded by Calin Georgescu and his close associates during a clandestine meeting that took place at a farm in Ciolpani, immediately after the cancellation of the election for the country’s top job. AGERPRES
