Climate change represents an unprecedented challenge, with its impact transcending national borders, president Klaus Iohannis said in his message on Tuesday that was presented at the opening of the „Climate Change Summit,” showing that it is imperative for the authorities to work together both nationally and internationally to find solutions and tackle climate change in an effective way.
„Climate change represents an unprecedented challenge the impact of which transcends national borders. Extreme weather events occur around the world, affecting our communities and well-being. In just a few months, Romania faced heat waves, periods of prolonged drought and extensive floods. In this context, it is imperative that we work together both nationally and internationally to find solutions and tackle climate change effectively. The „Climate Change Summit,” now in its third edition, supports the process of searching and identifying solutions with optimism and determination,” said the head of state, in his message presented at the event by state councillor Alexandra-Maria Bocse.
According to him, the Summit brings together a wide range of interested parties, including national and European Union officials, civil society and business leaders, as well as young leaders from all over Europe.
„I want to thank all of you, speakers at this event and members of the audience, for your work on climate change and your commitment to stay engaged on this issue. This commitment is essential for overcoming future challenges. We must accelerate the pace of our climate action. Romania recently adopted a new National Strategy on Adaptation to Climate Change, which guides the national response and the allocation of resources to make our nation more resilient to the negative impact of climate change. (…) We should not neglect climate change mitigation and we should ensure that the green transition is fair, inclusive and leaves no one behind. We must involve and support all countries and all citizens, especially those most exposed to environmental degradation,” states Iohannis.
President Klaus Iohannis shows that, through the Strategic Agenda 2024-2029 adopted at the European Council in June, European leaders committed to create „a stable framework and a supportive environment for the European production of net-zero technologies and products.”
„At the national level, we need to improve our policy and financial support for the research, production and use of green technologies that can help us protect the environment, as well as generate economic growth and new, high-quality jobs. It is increasingly clear that climate and environmental actions must go hand in hand with measures to increase competitiveness. Every sector – whether it’s the business environment, the academic environment, NGOs or public institutions – is essential for the fulfillment of this objective,’, emphasized Iohannis.
He asked the participants of the summit to identify solutions and make commitments „to effectively address climate change in Romania and at the international level.”
„We must join our forces and knowledge to build a safer, greener and more opportunity-filled future for everyone!,” the head of state also said.
