President Iohannis’ decision to resign, understandable, no need to dramatize, says Crin Antonescu

Crin Antonescu, the coalition candidate in the presidential elections, said on Monday that President Klaus Iohannis’ decision to resign is „an understandable one”, mentioning that the president of the Senate, Ilie Bolojan, will take over the interim.

„It is a decision that belongs to the president that I will not comment on. I don’t think we have reasons to dramatize. It is a decision made by the president. We have constitutional procedures. The Senate president is taking over as acting president. The government remains stable. Everything else is proceeding normally. I think it’s a preferable situation to a suspension process, which would have put a false issue on the agenda, going as far as a referendum. So I think that the president’s decision was a wise one and I am sure that we will proceed accordingly,” Antonescu said in Parliament.

Klaus Iohannis announced on Monday his resignation as President of Romania.

He said he will leave office on February 12.
