President Klaus Iohannis declared, on Thursday, that Romania is not a source of migration and it is not a transit country, showing that our country is open to collaborating with the European Commission on a pilot project to „verify certain faster, more efficient procedures and, in this way, even to create a good practice that can be taken over by other member states”, according to Agerpres.
„There is a pact on migration that is under discussion between the Council and the Parliament. We will not talk about that, but we will talk about aspects of migration related to the external, that is, how do we protect the external border of the European Union better, how do we return migrants faster, how we process asylum requests faster and so on. These things are important. I want to say one more time and be very clear: Romania is not a source of migration and Romania is not a transit country. We know how to protect our borders. But the problem is a European problem and then it is clear that we also want to participate in finding the best solutions. In this sense, we are open to collaborating with the European Commission on a pilot project that will come to verify certain faster, more efficient procedures and, in this way, even create a good practice that can be taken over by other member states,” the president said.
„Schengen refers to the freedom of movement of the European citizen, and when we talk about migration we are talking about procedures that are addressed to people who come from outside the European Union. So it is completely different. Oh, that in the opinion of some member states there are links between them, we have duly noted this issue and for this reason we want to find the best solutions. Romania is never part of the problem, but we always try to be part and contribute to the solution,” Iohannis added.
