Romania’s President, Nicusor Dan, will participate, on Thursday and Friday, in the European Council meeting to be held in Brussels, Kingdom of Belgium, the Presidential Administration reports.

The European Council will address a wide range of strategic issues for the future of the European Union, with the aim of moving towards a more competitive and more secure Europe, in the interest of its citizens, and strengthening the EU’s position as a predictable and reliable global player.

Taking into account the developments on the international scene and the Union’s priorities, the topics of the European Council meeting are manifold and will include: the situation of the war in Ukraine, the crisis in the Middle East, security and defence in Europe, the European Union as a global player, competitiveness, internal security, support for the Republic of Moldova and the Western Balkans and migration issues, the cited source shows.

The European leaders will discuss the continuation of EU support for Ukraine on several levels, developments in the process of negotiations to reach a just and lasting peace, and maintaining pressure on Russia. The Romanian president will reiterate our country’s support for the European initiatives aimed at helping Ukraine, including the EU accession process.

The situation in the Middle East will be addressed from the perspective of the ongoing developments in the region, the risks to international security of the Iranian nuclear program, the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and the imperative need to avoid escalation. President Dan will present the main elements of Romania’s position centered on coordination at the European level and with allies in order to find diplomatic solutions and ensure stability in the region.

Issues related to European security and defence will be addressed in the context of the results of the NATO Summit in The Hague, but also from the perspective of the progress made in the implementation of previous decisions, the discussion being structured on three main coordinates: financing options, capabilities and partnerships. Romania will reiterate that it will be an integral part of these efforts. The Republic of Moldova will be approached in response to Romania’s requests and its firm support will be reiterated in view of the EU-Republic of Moldova Summit on July 4, 2025 and the parliamentary elections in September.

The president of the European Council will brief leaders on the results of his visit to the Western Balkans, with Romania supporting EU enlargement with the countries of the region on their own merits.

Against the backdrop of the close link between the challenging international context and the Union’s internal economic priorities, EU leaders will discuss issues related to the EU’s role in the world and European competitiveness. Thus, the strategies for the Single Market will be analyzed, with a focus on innovation, investment and reducing energy dependence on Russia, as well as relations with key partners, including in the perspective of organizing relevant international summits in the coming period.

EU leaders will also emphasize the importance of security and stability in the Black Sea region, welcoming the EU Strategy for the Black Sea region, published in May 2025. President Dan will underscore that Romania, as a key player in the Black Sea region, will be actively involved in the implementation of this strategy.
