The President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, will attend the European Summit on the Arctic Region, hosted by the Republic of Finland in Rovaniemi, on 13–14 September 2026. The meeting is being held at the initiative of Finland’s Prime Minister, Petteri Orpo, and brings together leaders of European countries (the Federal Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Friedrich Merz; the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland, Donald Tusk; and the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen), alongside representatives of the EU institutions (the President of the European Council, António Costa, and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas).
The summit aims to strengthen the European Union’s strategic approach to the Arctic region, against a backdrop of its growing geopolitical, economic and climatic importance. The meeting will focus in particular on defining a more ambitious role for the EU in the security and economic development of the Arctic region.
During the discussions, President Nicușor Dan will present Romania’s vision for a coherent and unified approach to managing the challenges across the entire area stretching from the Arctic to the Black Sea, given that the security challenges in these regions are interconnected.
The President of Romania will express Romania’s interest and willingness to contribute to the EU and NATO’s joint efforts by assuming responsibilities in our region and the wider region, as well as by becoming involved in concrete sectoral projects in areas such as critical infrastructure protection, strengthening defence capabilities and energy security.
