President of Romania can run for parliamentary elections in last 3 months of term (PNL bill)

Published on

National Liberal Party (PNL) parliamentarians Daniel Fenechiu and Gabriel Andronache submitted on Wednesday to the Parliament the legislative proposal by which the President of Romania can run, in the last 3 months of the term, as an independent on the lists of a party or alliance in the parliamentary elections.

The bill modifies, in this sense, article 52 of the law on the election of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies.

„The president of Romania, depending on the date of the election of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, if he/she is in the last 3 months of the term, can run as an independent on the lists of a political party, a political alliance or an electoral alliance to obtain a senator’s mandate or of deputy. In case he/she is elected senator or deputy, the president of Romania is obliged, after validation, to choose between the quality of senator or deputy and that of president”, the draft states.

The bill will first be debated by the Senate and then by the Chamber of Deputies, which is the decision-making body.
