President of Vietnam resigns after being blamed for officials’ wrongdoing

Published on

The President of Vietnam, Nguyen Xuan Phuc, submitted his resignation after the Communist Party found him responsible for irregularities committed by other government officials, Reuters and Xinhua report, Agerpres reads.

Former prime minister, Nguyen Xuan Phuc (68 years old) held the position of president for less than two years, one of which was largely ceremonial. It is not yet clear who will replace him.

„Being fully aware of his responsibilities to the people and the party, he submitted his request to resign from his positions, to give up his job and to retire,” the official VNA news agency reported, citing the central committee of the Vietnamese Communist Party.

Speculation about Phuc’s resignation arose following the dismissal of two deputy prime ministers earlier this month.

The two were his subordinates when Nguyen Xuan Phuc led the government in Hanoi as prime minister.

To become effective, Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s resignation as president must be approved by the National Assembly.

The Reuters news agency reported on Monday that the legislative forum will organize an extraordinary session this week.

Officially, Vietnam is led by four ‘pillars’: the general secretary of the Communist Party, the country’s president, the prime minister and the president of the National Assembly.
