National Liberal Party (PNL) first deputy chairman Rare Bogdan said on Wednesday that the Liberals have not discussed the idea of going into the elections with a tandem of president and prime minister, noting that there is no agreement with the Social Democratic Party (PSD) on this issue and that he does not want to sit at the table with the Social Democrats after the elections.
„We have not discussed a tandem president – premier. We are going with the idea of a president. Chairman Ciuca will be validated on Sunday at the National Council,” Rares Bogdan said at the Palace of Parliament.
Asked if, there will be an agreement after the elections between PSD and PNL for the tandem of president and prime minister, he replied: „There is no agreement whatsoever”.
Asked whether, the PNL and the PSD will sit down together after the elections to offer stability, Rares Bogdan said: „I am not at all convinced that we will sit down with the PSD, I do not want to sit down with the PSD.
„We will see who we are the winners in the party: those who do not want PSD at the table or those who want PSD at the table, I do not want PSD at the table,” he added.
Regarding the possibility that the PNL could be in opposition, in case PSD wins, the Liberal MEP replied: „Opposition is also a solution, no one died in opposition, it has grown stronger, but I am absolutely convinced that we will govern Romania, we will have the prime minister, he will be at the proposal of the parties, but the president will appoint him, and the president of Romania will be Nicolae Ciuca, because he is the best prepared, the most distinguished, he is the only one who has an extremely serious career behind him”.
Asked if he could guarantee that Nicolae Ciuca would appoint a Liberal prime minister if he becomes president, he said: „I cannot guarantee that because, as you well know, we are talking about a coalition, because the PNL cannot get 51% on its own, we hope for 30-27% in the parliamentary elections”.
However, he rejected the possibility of nominating a Social Democrat premier in this case. „No, my proposal is to appoint a right-wing premier. Romania needs a right-wing premier and right-wing policies,” Rares Bogdan added.
