Presidential candidate of the ‘Romania Forward’ Electoral Alliance Crin Antonescu declared on Friday during a visit to the capital city of the Republic of Moldova that a pro-Western president represents a guarantee that the relationship between Chisinau and Bucharest will continue.
„The result of the elections in Bucharest is not indifferent to you in Chisinau. A pro-Western, firm president, with a solid base, with stability and a majority behind him is a guarantee that the relationship between Chisinau and Bucharest will continue and this is a relationship of mutual assistance, which has led to spectacular progress in recent years for the Republic of Moldova on the path to European integration. Today we can say that this integration has already begun not only through commitments and diplomatic procedures, but through concrete things that have happened, beginning with the road and energy infrastructure to relationships that are just the beginning of what I, as a candidate for Romania’s Presidency see as the future, a much broader, economic, commercial relationship, which will complement everything that has been done in these years from a political, cultural point of view and all the other things that have made us behave – true to reality – as one people in two states,” Antonescu told a press conference in Chisinau.
He went on to note that the Republic of Moldova can be an example for Romania in many ways.
„Here, the current administration, Madam President, the government, the parliamentary majority are fighting a difficult battle and are fighting it courageously and so far – God willing from now on – successfully. It’s in this sense that I was saying that in many ways you can be an example for us, in Bucharest. We will be ending, I hope, in three weeks, an electoral year that started in March 2024, some eventful presidential elections that are not over yet, with turbulence, with problems that cost Romania due to the temporary nature of its leadership, due to postponement. But we are finally on the final lap and I am convinced that everything will end well, that we will end up with a president who, together with a parliamentary majority and a government, will reinforce, will definitively consecrate Romania’s quality as a Western country, belonging to the EU, the NATO security system, the values for which our partners, our colleagues, our brothers in the Republic of Moldova are making extraordinary and so far spectacularly successful efforts to get back on track,” Antonescu said.
According to the ruling coalition’s presidential hopeful, Romania is going through a complicated time as far as international relations are concerned, pointing out that efforts are needed to revitalize transatlantic relations and guarantees regarding NATO.
„Let’s make all our partners in the EU and, if possible, in the US understand that the security of Moldova and Ukraine is our security as well,” Antonescu added.
Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament Igor Grosu said in his turn that it is important for the president of Romania to be a determined advocate for Chisinau.
„Romania’s presidential election is more than a simple electoral competition, it’s about the direction Romania will take, but also about the strong voice Romania will have within the European Union to support the Republic of Moldova. On May 4, our unity is needed again, Bessarabian brothers, to support a European, free and strong Romania. A European, dignified and strong Romania also means a Moldova that is firmly moving towards a promising future and remains free to choose its path. The National Liberal Party has been our most active supporter in the European capital cities. It is important for the Republic of Moldova for this to continue, that we have in the president of Romania a determined advocate of our country’s interests. On May 4, dear Bessarabians, let us show the whole world what a force the citizens of the Republic of Moldova are, let us not allow foreign, extremist forces that do not love the Republic of Moldova to divert Romania from the right path, from the path of economic development and peacekeeping,” said Igor Grosu.
