A total of 5,159 applications for voting by mail in the presidential election of May 4 were registered by Monday on the portal www.votstrainatate.ro, with the deadline for Romanian citizens domiciled or residing abroad to submit applications in this regard set to expire in three days.
Romanian citizens abroad were able to register until March 4 as voters abroad at a polling station, with 2,611 applications being submitted in this regard, of which 2,238 met the legal conditions provided for in article 8 paragraph (1) of Law no. 370/2004 in order to be able to organize, with the agreement of the authorities in the respective country, polling stations, according to the Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP).
In the presidential elections, the Romanian voter can vote at any polling station abroad, even if he/she has not registered on the portal www.votstrainatate.ro. Registration on the portal is only required for voting by correspondence or for setting up a polling station in the localities or groups of localities where at least 100 voters have chosen to vote.
In order to vote by correspondence, the Romanian voter must have his/her domicile or residence abroad.
The deadline for registration in the Electoral Register as a voter abroad by correspondence is March 20, 2025.
According to the AEP website, the most requests for postal voting have been registered so far in Germany – 1,175, followed by the United Kingdom – 897, Switzerland – 443, France – 421, the United States – 330, Spain – 253 and Italy – 232.
