The Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR)’s president George Simion announced on Tuesday that he would challenge the results of the May 18 presidential election with the Constitutional Court.
In a video message on his Facebook account, the AUR presidential candidate explained that his supporters had asked him „insistently” over the last 24 hours to do so, noting that he would act through legal channels „both domestically and internationally”.
„You told me that you don’t want a president like this puppet who, theoretically, enjoyed the support of the Romanians. So we will act through legal channels, both domestically and internationally, so that our movement can win”, said George Simion.
According to him, the appeal will be based „on the exact reasons in the decision of December 6, 2024” that canceled last year’s election, accusing that 100 million euros was allocated to the Republic of Moldova for electoral tourism and for buying the will of Bessarabian Romanians. „Administrative resources of another state were used to influence the election. Deceased people voted in the May 18 election and no calculation in the world can show us that over 11,500,000 Romanians voted. International observers saw interference, not only from the Republic of Moldova, but also from the French state. Social media were manipulated and algorithms were used to influence Romanian citizens. The testimony of the Telegram creator in which he says that the French Government intervened to censor our voices during this period is telling and I demand the hearing of the Telegram creator before these elections are declared valid”, detailed the AUR leader.
The Constitutional Court is obliged to take into account its own jurisprudence, he also conveyed.
The AUR leader mentioned the reason why he congratulated Nicusor Dan: „The reason why I, considering the numbers from the polling stations, congratulated Nicusor Dan, was the fact that I love Romania, I love the Romanian people and I never want to see bloodshed in our country, which would justify chaos and the takeover of power by some.”
