German Chancellor Friedrich Merz congratulated independent candidate Nicusor Dan on Monday for his victory in the second round of Romania’s presidential election, which took place on Sunday.
„Romania has committed to a strong and secure Europe: Dear @NicusorDanRO, congratulations on your electoral victory!,” Merz wrote on his account on the X platform.
According to data centralised by the Central Electoral Bureau, Nicusor Dan, an independent candidate, garnered 6,165,741 votes (53.61%) in the second round of the presidential election, while his opponent, George Simion, leader of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), received 5,335,752 votes (46.39%).
Out of a total of 19,945 polling stations, results have been centralised from 19,924 stations, representing 99.89%.
The total number of voters who participated in the second round was 11,635,741, which represents 64.72% of the total number of voters registered on the permanent electoral lists.
