PresidentialElection2025/Nicusor Dan: There is no such thing as me withdrawing; second round with either me or Crin Antonescu

Capital city mayor Nicusor Dan on Tuesday reiterated that he will not withdraw from the presidential race, adding that he will discuss, in the coming period, both with the chair of the USR (Save Romania Union), Elena Lasconi, and with „more people.”

Asked in Parliament if he believed that several candidates will fragment the vote on the pro-European side, he said that these „are collateral issues.”

„There is a risk, but at least for the moment there is no risk that a pro-Western candidate will not enter the second round. (…) We have a vote in two rounds. As things are at this point, a pro-Western candidate will enter the second round. If the voting took place today, this candidate would be either Crin Antonescu or me. And I don’t think much will change in this campaign and I am not addressing just a certain audience, I am addressing the public – both the so-called isolationist public and the pro-Western public, trying to convince that Romania needs a real change, on the one hand, and on the other hand to remain in the European Union and NATO. There is no such thing as me withdrawing. And I will have discussions with many people,” stated Nicusor Dan, at the end of the meeting of the management committees, which gave a favourable opinion on the budget of the Capital City Hall.

Regarding a compromise option that he could consider regarding Elena Lasconi, namely a possible support for her at the Capital City Hall if she withdraws from the race for Cotroceni, Nicusor Dan says that „there are many discussions that could take place.” However, he specified that at the moment such a scenario does not exist.

„Of course there are discussions with different hypotheses and not only with Elena Lasconi, but with more people. On the one hand, this scenario did not exist, it was not discussed, and it is quite difficult to tell Bucharest residents: „vote for X,” „vote for Y,” anyway, because there are people who are informed and vote as they decide,” explained the mayor of Bucharest.

Asked if Elena Lasconi would be capable of leading the Capital City Hall, he replied: „Yes, she is a very capable woman.”

Nicusor Dan mentioned that, before launching his candidacy, he conducted such a survey, which told him that he had to move on.

„You have seen this in the public space – I am between 17 and 20% and Mrs. Lasconi is at 7 – 8%,” the mayor of the capital added.
