Primary energy, electricity resources down January through July, electricity consumption down 1.6pct

Romania’s primary energy and electricity resources decreased by 1% each, in the first seven months of the current year, compared to the same period in 2023, according to data published on Friday by the Institute National Statistics (INS).

In the said interval, the main primary energy resources totaled 18.586 million tonnes of oil equivalent (toe), decreasing by 187,200 toe.

Also, domestic production amounted to 9.947 million toe, down by 574,300 toe (-5.5%) compared to the period January 1 – July 31, 2023, and import was 8.64 million toe, up by 387,100 toe ( +4.7%).

During this period, the electricity resources were 38.742 billion kWh, decreasing by 401.2 million kWh compared to the period January 1 – July 31, 2023.

Production from thermal power plants accounted for 9.922 billion kWh, increasing by 168.4 million kWh (+1.7%). Production from hydropower plants accounted for 9.739 billion kWh, down by 3.147 billion kWh (-24.4%), and that from nuclear power plants was 6.062 billion kWh, down by 283.7 million kWh (-4, 5%).

At the same time, the production from wind power plants was 3.757 billion kWh, down by 734.5 million kWh compared to the period of the first seven months of 2023, and the solar energy produced in photovoltaic installations during this period was 2.146 billion kWh, up with 827.8 million kWh compared to the same period last year.

The final consumption of electricity in this period was 29.339 billion kWh, 1.6% higher than in the first seven months of 2023: the final consumption of electricity in the economy increased by 1.5%; population consumption increased by 2%, and public lighting decreased by 1.9%.

Electricity exports amounted to 6.473 billion kWh, down by 735.1 million kWh. Own technological consumption in networks and stations was 2.93 billion kWh, down by 115.9 million kWh.
