Prosecutors have expanded the investigation into the case of the maritime drone that exploded in the Port of Constanța to include charges of destruction resulting in particularly serious consequences, violation of regulations governing weapons and ammunition, and violation of regulations governing explosive materials, the General Prosecutor’s Office announced on Tuesday.

On June 5, prosecutors from the Constanta Tribunal Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation ex officio after a military device, carrying weapons and possibly explosives, was reported in the Constanta Port area.

Subsequently, by order, the case was taken over by the Constanta Court of Appeals Prosecutor’s Office, which ordered the initiation of criminal proceedings in rem regarding the offenses of non-compliance with regulations governing weapons and ammunition and non-compliance with regulations governing explosive materials.

“From the on-site investigations currently underway, it has emerged that around 6:30 a.m., in the Fanei 78 area of the Port of Constanța, a gray military vessel, stranded and resembling a maritime drone, was reported. The unmarked military vessel was visibly equipped with video surveillance systems and a satellite communications antenna. Subsequently, around 10:30 a.m., it exploded. An on-site investigation was ordered and conducted in this case, and has now been completed,” the Prosecutor’s Office stated.

By order of June 8, the criminal investigation was expanded to include the offense of destruction with particularly serious consequences, offenses of non-compliance with the regulations governing weapons and ammunition (3 offenses), and non-compliance with the regulations governing explosive materials (3 offenses), all of which are in actual concurrence.

Criminal investigation activities are currently underway to establish all the facts of the case.
