Prosecutors in Constanța opened a criminal investigation on Friday into violations of regulations governing firearms and ammunition and violations of regulations governing explosive materials, in connection with the explosion of a maritime drone in the port.
“Prosecutors from the Constanta Tribunal Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation ex officio today, June 5, 2026, after the presence of a military device, carrying weapons and possibly explosives, was reported in the Constanta Port area. Subsequently, by order, the case was taken over by the Constanta Court of Appeals Prosecutor’s Office, and it was ordered that a criminal investigation be initiated in rem regarding the commission of the offense of non-compliance with the regulations governing weapons and ammunition and the offense of non-compliance with the regulations governing explosive materials,” the General Prosecutor’s Office announced in a press release.
According to prosecutors, ongoing on-site investigations revealed that, around 6:30 a.m., in the area of Dana 78 in the Port of Constanța, a gray military vessel, stranded and resembling a maritime drone, was reported.
The unmarked military vessel had visible video surveillance systems and satellite communication antennas mounted on it. Subsequently, around 10:30 a.m., it exploded.
