Two in ten Romanians (21%) say that protecting their health and reducing pollution are the main advantages of increasing the energy efficiency of buildings, according to a specialist survey published on Wednesday.

According to the Reveal survey, carried out on behalf of the „Efficient Romania” programme, the most important aspects influenced by improving the energy performance of buildings are: reducing utility costs (19%), improving individual health (16%) and increasing personal comfort (15%).

Also, seven in ten Romanians agree that energy waste contributes to accelerating climate change, with this point of view being more pronounced among women (76%) than men (64%).

According to the survey, hospitals (81%), schools (78%) and apartment blocks (74%) are the main „unhealthy” buildings that should benefit from measures to increase energy efficiency.

At the same time, 65% to 81% of Romanians believe that it is important to increase the energy efficiency of all types of buildings. People over 45 years of age show a significantly higher interest, with an increase of 5 – 7% for all indicators.

The Reveal Marketing Research survey was conducted online, commissioned by the Efficient Romania programme, between November 21 and 29, 2024, on a sample of 1,003 respondents. The maximum sampling error is +/-3.1%, at a 95% confidence level.

Efficient Romania is a private project of national scope, carried out by the Energy Policy Group (EPG), in partnership with OMV Petrom, who provides funding.

The project started in the summer of 2019 and consists of carrying out a national programme to promote energy efficiency and aims to support the achievement of Romania’s 2030 targets in terms of reducing carbon emissions and increasing energy efficiency, both through information and education campaigns, as well as by carrying out concrete major renovation projects in public schools in various regions of the country.
