Protest in Victoriei Square/Four protesters placed under house arrest; one remanded in custody

Published on

Bucharest District 1 Court ordered on Wednesday night that four protesters who attacked law-enforcement officers at the protest in Victoriei Square be placed under house arrest.

According to judicial sources, those placed under house arrest include Ciprian Pamfile, the leader of those inciting violence.

Another man was remanded in custody for 30 days.

‘On 15 September, a protest by animal breeders took place in Victoriei Square, which shortly afterwards escalated into more widespread violence directed against law-enforcement officers and the equipment at their disposal, with several gendarmes injured and vehicles and property destroyed. The previous day, a 36-year-old man from Bucharest posted a message on the TikTok app urging the public to take part in the demonstration, but in a violent manner. Given the broader context of the violence, the case was taken over by the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Bucharest Tribunal. Following the investigation, five men were apprehended and identified, including the man who incited the public to violence. The five men, aged between 33 and 51, are accused of offences including assault on a public official, criminal damage, disturbing public order and peace, and public incitement. They were formally designated as defendants and detained overnight. Today, prosecutors will seek their remand in custody for 30 days,’ Diana Călinescu, spokesperson for the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Bucharest Tribunal, announced on Wednesday.

The man who incited people to violence is Ciprian Pamfile, a well-known supporter of Călin Georgescu. He has previously taken part in several demonstrations in support of the former presidential candidate, and at Tuesday’s protest in Victoriei Square he appeared shirtless, being identified and taken away by law-enforcement officers.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Bucharest Tribunal, investigations conducted to date have established that 10 gendarmes were injured at Tuesday’s protest, some of whom needed medical attention, and several items were destroyed: a Gendarmerie special vehicle, safety barriers and property belonging to STB.

‘The protesters are accused of attacking law-enforcement officers with metal pipes, clubs and various objects thrown at them, namely kerbstones, bottles or metal barriers. They also destroyed the barriers separating the directions of traffic that belong to STB,’ the representative of the Prosecutor’s Office added.

Another protester was also detained in connection with the violence in Victoriei Square and is being investigated separately in a case handled by the Prosecutor’s Office attached to District 1 Court.

Another instigator from Pamfile’s group was also caught by police in traffic with a pistol in his car.
