The Social Democratic Party (PSD) calls on the National Liberal Party (PNL) to show political maturity and to deal responsibly with the obligations it has as a ruling party.
In a press release sent to AGERPRES on Tuesday, the social-democrats emphasize that, „regardless of the stakes and political egos that some politicians may have, a party in power has an obligation towards its citizens to ensure the proper functioning of the state and the government.”
„Therefore, no matter how intense the electoral competition is, the parties in the ruling coalition have the obligation to maintain a minimum of dialogue in order to be able to take the executive decisions that Romania needs during these elections until the formation of another parliamentary majority and until the investiture of a new government. Political statements that call into question the government’s ability to function can profoundly affect the national economy, investor confidence and, ultimately, the lives of citizens. A ruling party cannot make decisions based on electoral calculations alone. What is at stake is not how much the PNL can gain from an electoral viewpoint by announcing that it is breaking the coalition, but remains in government. What is at stake is how much Romania stands to lose as a result of such statements,” shows the Social Democratic Party.
According to the cited source, „the announcement made by the USR [Save Romania Union] regarding the tabling of a motion of censure against the Government shows the dead end to which this puerile electoral game is leading”.
„The PNL could be put in the position of sanctioning its own ministers by a vote in Parliament and causing a total blockage in the functioning of Romania. The only way out of this situation is for the PNL to return to the coalition table and behave responsibly,” PSD said.
PNL leader Nicolae Ciuca said on Monday that the political dialogue with PSD no longer exists and that the liberals remain in government in order to continue to be „the guardians of democracy and freedom”.
