The PSD is waiting for President Nicușor Dan to make the first move in the negotiations to form the new government and to officially announce the nomination for the position of prime minister. Following the PSD leadership meeting, Lia Olguța Vasilescu stated that the party neither rejects nor confirms its support for Eugen Tomac, according to realitatea.net.
“We are taking on the responsibility of governing; we are awaiting the president’s nomination (…) Depending on that, we will meet with the party leadership and make a decision,” stated the mayor of Craiova.
When asked whether PSD leaders support Eugen Tomac leading the future government, Vasilescu stated that she could not answer with a simple “yes” or “no.”
“In principle, Eugen Tomac is a person of good sense, but let’s also see what he wants (…) We’ll see, depending on the list of ministers he presents, depending on the agenda he commits to, because we don’t have a problem with the person himself; we have an issue regarding how he intends to comply with a series of conditions,” stated Lia Olguța Vasilescu.
The Social Democrats say that internal discussions will take place only after the president announces his official proposal.
“We will discuss this within the party leadership after we receive the nomination from Nicușor Dan.”
When asked why the PSD did not propose Sorin Grindeanu, Vasilescu replied:
“We are waiting to see what Nicușor Dan decides. (…) We can have a discussion with any politician or technocrat, as long as they meet certain conditions. And this government would have lasted if the PSD’s wishes had also been taken into account.”
