PSD’ Grindeanu says gov’t should not fall every time Constitutional Court rejects law

Published on

Social Democratic Party (PSD) interim chairman Sorin Grindeanu said that the Government does not necessarily have to fall every time the Constitutional Court rejects a piece of legislation.

Grindeanu was asked on Sunday, during a broadcast on Antena 3, to comment on a statement made by Save Romania Union (USR) leader Dominic Fritz, who said that it would be difficult for Bolojan’s Government to continue if the Constitutional Court rules that its actions are unconstitutional.

„First of all, what Fritz said is nonsense – and I’ll give you arguments to back that up. Just because you propose something doesn’t mean it’s automatically constitutional and that it has to pass the Court. If that were the case, we wouldn’t need a Constitutional Court. And to say that every time the Constitutional Court rejects a law, the Government has to fall – I’m sorry, but that’s not a sound line of reasoning,” said Grindeanu.

He also pointed out that a Prime Minister doesn’t have to resign if a law endorsed by the Government fails to pass in Parliament.

„There might be elements within the law that could be improved – you come back, revise it, discuss it again, and reapprove it,” added Sorin Grindeanu. AGERPRES
