PSD’s Ciolacu: Coalition will carry mandate through, new gov’t to be invested round December 23

Social Democratic Party (PSD) Chairman and Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu estimates Romania’s new government will be invested around December 23, after the parliamentary and presidential elections.

He said, while in Suceava, on Friday, that until the new executive is invested the current coalition will be functioning, in spite of apparent dissensions between Social Democrats and Liberals.

„Romania truly needs political stability and we have assumed this political stability. (…) We are in an election year, it is normal to have this kind of statements as well, nonetheless the coalition will carry its mandate through. We believe the future government will be invested on December 23,” the PSD leader said.

He pointed out that the PSD would have wanted joint lists with the National Liberal Party (PNL) in the December elections, but he hinted that the Liberals didn’t endorse such an idea.

„I believe we have brought coherence in the governing act and a difference from the former right-wing coalition (…) where nothing worked. I believe Romania doesn’t want this. We are mature people. We have an interest not necessarily common in these elections because this time we run separately. I showed them the potential of a common candidacy in the elections for the European Parliament. They chose a different way. I respect it,” Ciolacu pointed out.
