PSD’s Ciolacu: It is obvious that minimum wage will have to be increased

Published on

Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Marcel Ciolacu declares himself in favor of increasing the minimum wage, stating that, at this moment, several options are being taken into account, according to Agerpres.

„A third of Romanians are paid the minimum wage. This is a little different compared to the economically more developed countries in Europe. There are 1.5 – 1.7 million Romanians paid the minimum wage. Both in Italy, as well as in Germany, the minimum wage has been increased three times in Germany. Why? To maintain its workforce,” said Ciolacu, on Wednesday, in Petresti, southern Dambovita county, where he visited, together with prime minister Nicolae Ciuca, the Iveco assembly plant for military trucks.

He also explained why the minimum wage must increase.

„For example, in construction, the Construction Employers’ Association came and told me that 3,000 RON is far too little for construction, that they would prefer around 4,000 RON. This is how it is done, in any economy, if we want to keep the added value in Romania and the Romanians in Romania. There is no other economic approach anywhere in the world. It is natural to increase the minimum wage. There are several options also presented to us by the SMEs and those from industry. I am firmly convinced that we will also make the decision together with the Ministry of Finance. But it is obvious that the minimum wage will have to be increased,” stated Marcel Ciolacu.
