National leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Marcel Ciolacu said on Monday that the PSD – National Liberal Party (PNL) alliance did win the Bucharest district 1 and district 2 mayoralties [where the score was very close – editor’s note], adding that a coalition meeting is going to decide on the presidential and parliamentary elections.
Ciolacu was asked at the PSD headquarters when the party’s candidate for the presidential elections will be selected.
„I don’t know. Let me first see the final results and then definitely have a discussion with my colleagues. Today I will talk to Mr Ciuca. I spoke with Mr. Ciuca in the morning, we are going to have a coalition meeting. We won district 1 and district 2. Mr Tuta won and so did Mr Hopinca,” said Ciolacu.
He added that the results of the European election show that the PSD-PNL alliance has received a strong signal from Romanians that they trust it.
„From my point of view, when an electoral alliance has 5 in front, it is a strong signal sent by Romanians that they trust this alliance. Truly there are all the prerequisites for creating a political alliance. But we will see the decision. (…) If we make a political alliance, that means that we have a joint candidate for the position of president and a joint ticket for the general election in December. (…) PSD has won the elections for the moment. It is very unlikely that PSD will give up a candidate, taking into account that it really won them,” Ciolacu said.
He added that PSD will look at the June 9 local and European elections.
