Acting Social Democratic Party (PSD) Chairperson Sorin Grindeanu has called on Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan to withdraw his proposal to appoint Oana Gheorghiu as Deputy Prime Minister, in order to avoid „compromising” Romania’s relationship with the United States.
„To avoid compromising our relationship with the United States of America and prevent an irreparable diplomatic disaster in relation to our strategic partner, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan must immediately withdraw the proposal submitted to President Nicusor Dan, nominating Ms Oana Gheorghiu as Deputy Prime Minister of Romania! Those who aspire to high-ranking positions in the Romanian state must understand, once and for all, that every irresponsible statement made in the public space directly harms Romania’s strategic interests,” Grindeanu wrote on Facebook on Tuesday.
According to the Social Democratic leader, „such an institutional move by the Prime Minister must be urgently reconsidered.”
„In a government already filled with anti-American voices and critics of the Trump Administration, how do such appointments help or lend credibility to Romania’s efforts on key issues with our transatlantic ally? Let me remind you of the Visa Waiver Programme a step so eagerly awaited by all Romanians! Therefore, I believe that such an institutional move by the Prime Minister must be urgently reconsidered. I call on our Coalition partner, Ilie Bolojan, to take into account the PSD’s position and to immediately withdraw the proposal to appoint Ms Gheorghiu to this senior public office in the Romanian state,” Grindeanu added.
He stressed that there can be „no half measures” on this matter and that „the PSD must be consulted in such decisions.” AGERPRES
