The Social Democratic Party (PSD) should, „normally” have the first chance to appoint the prime minister in the upcoming government, given the result of last year’s parliamentary elections, the party’s interim president Sorin Grindeanu said on Saturday.
„PSD can claim the position of prime minister. We just wait, but we certainly don’t say no, to such a scenario. Normally, PSD should be the first option for prime minister. Romanians decided in December; PSD came in first place. That does not mean that we do not respect the powers of the president who consults with the parties and, after that, sees what would be a solution that could lead to a stable majority in Parliament. I believe that is how we should reason, not denying and running away from the responsibility given by the Romanians. Once again, we won the elections last December,” Grindeanu told PrimaTV private broadcaster.
He did not confirm that he no longer wants the position of transport minister, nor that the portfolio should continue to stay with PSD, saying that he would not like to see a person in that position who would specialise in the workplace.
„I didn’t say that either [that he no longer wants to be the transport minister]. I said that, after a number of years, this wear and tear appears, even if everyone tells you that you have achieved results, highways have been built, many things have been done in these years. Yes, but maybe you don’t have the same dynamism as you did at the beginning. (…) I think we need to talk about something else. I would not like to see, as has been seen too many times in these years, people who come there for on -the job training, learn there what it is like to be a minister, mechanisms.”
The interim national leader of PSD added that he does not want political partnerships that last six months, and after some games in Parliament, PSD will no longer be part of a majority.
„I don’t want partnerships and neither do my colleagues want partnerships that last six months and, after six months, through possible games in Parliament, PSD will no longer be part of a majority. We better discuss these things from now on and we don’t mess around for six months or a year,” said the PSD leader.
