The government will have to make the final decision on the date of the presidential election – September 15 or 29, the first round, spokesman for the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Lucian Romascanu said on Tuesday.
„What’s left to do this week is for Mr Predoiu- who at this moment is the interior minister and has two decisions on the table, the one with September 15 and the one with September 29 as the dates of the first round- to decide, being a PNL minister, together with the National Liberal Party (PNL), which of these two dates are convenient for them; we are making this concession to the National Liberal Party, being able to accept even September 29 if Mr Predoiu initiate a government decision in that regard.”
Setting the date of the election for the President of Romania in September is „a decision of responsible people who are leading the two largest parties in Romania, a decision voted in the governing bodies of the parties, (…) ,” Romascanu said, adding that the schedule had been established in the spring.
„The decision is up to the minister of interior.”
Romascanu also said that the most likely scenario is that, at the end of this week, a decision is taken on setting the date of the election.
„If the government meeting is on Friday, of course the decision taken up by the Interior Minister, Catalin Predoiu, will have to be made on Friday.”
