Presidential adviser Radu Burnete said on Wednesday evening that Eugen Tomac, the designated prime minister tasked with forming a new government and securing a parliamentary majority, will succeed in doing so, stressing that “the rest of the scenarios being circulated are nothing more than press speculation”.

“It is not a scheme. It is not an opening move in some kind of game. Our country needs to be governed with full powers in these very difficult years. The President of Romania has repeatedly explained that he is not playing games and that he will appoint a prime minister with the clear goal of securing a majority and forming a government. The rest of the scenarios being circulated, including those concerning me, are nothing more than press speculation. Over the past few weeks my name has been floated for all sorts of government positions. That is to be expected. The press is free, and my proximity to the president makes me a natural candidate for such speculation. A year ago I accepted the president’s invitation to join his team in these complicated years for our country, and I will remain in this position as long as I have his confidence and believe that I can support him,” Radu Burnete wrote on his Facebook page. In recent days, he has been mentioned in the media as a possible future deputy prime minister in the Tomac Cabinet.

He said he would like “the parties from the former governing coalition to think very carefully about the vote they have to cast in Parliament next week”.

“Eugen Tomac has boldly taken on a very difficult mission, and I hope the parties will act responsibly and give the country a stable government at least until they manage to forge a new pro-Western, pro-European, pro-American political formula. From the PNRR to the defense of the country, from the country’s rating to reducing the deficit and rebuilding competitiveness, from vulnerable citizens to those who are desperate and bombarded with disinformation, we have too many urgencies and problems to remain stuck only in political calculations, important though they are,” Radu Burnete also wrote.
