PNL MEP Rareș Bogdan said on Thursday that the Liberals must approach designated prime minister Eugen Tomac and his government with as much openness as possible, noting that he would be the first head of government in the past year who understands the partnership with the United States “exactly”.

“I have known Mr Tomac for a long time, he is a colleague in Brussels, and I can tell you that he is the first prime minister in the past year who understands exactly the partnership with the United States, which makes me happy. (…) The beauty of democracy is that we can have different opinions and different platforms. When a person whom I met in person a year ago at Mar-a-Lago, and who in the past six months I think has been to the United States about five times, and whom I also know for sure is a convinced pro-European, plus a man who embraces conservative values related to family, faith and patriotism, is put forward to form a government, I think we must look at it very carefully, but with as much openness as possible, and I appreciate his desire for dialogue,” Bogdan said before the meeting of the PNL National Political Bureau.

In his view, President Nicușor Dan had a good stance. “It is not pressure, it is the speech of a president who understands exactly the situation Romania is in, and it was one of the very good positions, in my view. I was pleased, after a long time, with the President of Romania. I hope he continues in the same tone,” Rareș Bogdan said.

The PNL National Political Bureau met on Thursday to decide whether or not it would support the Eugen Tomac government. The talks are attended by Liberal MPs, mayors of county-seat municipalities and county council presidents.

According to sources, PNL leader Ilie Bolojan reportedly proposed at the meeting that the Liberals should not support the Tomac government in Parliament and should let PSD take on governing.
