Renewing Romania’s European Project (REPER) party supports the organisation of presidential elections in November, party co-chair Ramona Strugariu said on Tuesday, after the consultations at the Government.
„The REPER party went with a very clear mandate, first of all to organise the elections on time and this was the most direct message that we sent: we are not playing the electoral game of one political party or the other, but to go by what the law says and on a timetable that respects the legislation in force. At the same time I emphasised that the legislation in force is deficient and we are in dire need of an electoral reform and it must be discussed as soon as possible with the parties,” she said.
At the same time, she said that she signaled to the prime minister the „mismanagement” of the electoral process, and REPER requested that the next elections were monitored internationally.
Also, Strugariu said, the party she leads asked for a commission to analyse the way local elections were conducted.
„We have suggested very clearly to the prime minister that we do not want any kind of merger for the presidential and parliamentary elections that are to follow now,” added REPER co-chair Dragos Pislaru. According to him, the prime minister agreed with this variant.
„At this moment, the government has no plan to overlap (the elections – editor’s note),” said Pislaru.
