Published on

Rishi Sunak will become the next United Kingdom’s Prime Minister after winning the ruling Conservative Party’s leadership contest, the international press agencies report, Agerpres reads.

He defeated centrist politician Penny Mordaunt, who failed to get enough backing from lawmakers to enter the ballot, and the former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who withdrew from the contest. Johnson said he could no longer unite the party, according to Reuters.

„This decision is an historic one and shows, once again, the diversity and talent of our party. Rishi has my full support,” Mordaunt said in a statement.

Sunak (42 years old and a former finance minister) will become the third prime minister of the United Kingdom in less than two months. He will be the first British Prime Minister of Indian origin and the youngest in over 200 years.
