Romania among EU countries with the steepest fuel price increases in June 2026

The average price of fuel and lubricants for private transport in the European Union rose by 13.7% in June 2026 compared with June 2025, with Romania among the member states recording the steepest annual price increases, according to data published by Eurostat on Wednesday.

According to the European statistics office, the price of fuel and lubricants for private transport rose in all EU member states, but the increases were still smaller than in May, when the EU average jumped by 20.7% and four member states recorded rises of more than 30%.

In June 2026 compared with June 2025, the largest price increases in fuel and lubricants for private transport were recorded in Bulgaria (26%), Lithuania (23.5%) and Romania (23.1%). At the other end of the scale, the smallest price increases were recorded in Hungary (2.3%) and Poland (5.8%).

From one month to the next, EU consumers benefited from an average 6.4% drop in diesel prices and a 4.2% drop in petrol prices in June 2026 compared with May 2026.

According to Eurostat, diesel prices fell in all EU countries in June 2026 compared with the previous month. The sharpest declines were in the Czech Republic (down 11.3%), Poland (down 9.7%) and Bulgaria (down 9.4%), while the smallest were in Hungary (down 0.6%), Italy (down 1.4%) and Slovenia (down 1.6%).

As for petrol prices, Cyprus (0.7%) and Italy (0.5%) were the only EU states to record increases in June compared with May. The rest of the countries recorded price falls, the largest being in Sweden (down 7.8%), Belgium (down 7.0%) and Poland (down 6.6%).

In Romania, according to Eurostat, diesel and petrol prices fell by almost 4% in June 2026 compared with May 2026.
