Romania can be a good example of an open and democratic society, including through the diversity, energies and skills of its Roma ethnic citizens, President Klaus Iohannis said in a message issued on Monday on International Roma Day and on the Celebration of the Romani Ethnicity in Romania.
„The International Roma Day and the Celebration of the Roma Ethnicity in Romania give me the opportunity to convey to Romania’s citizens of Roma ethnicity my wishes for peace and prosperity. This holiday, dedicated to the Roma identity and the cultural diversity it stands for brings to attention, once more, the importance of intercultural dialogue and mutual respect, which are fundamental for a harmonious coexistence in society,” the head of the state said in the message delivered by presidential advisor Sergiu Nistor during the event organized on this occasion at the Parliament Palace.
According to President Iohannis, the celebration of the Roma ethnicity in Romania concomitantly with International Roma Day marks a moment of global solidarity around the common human values we share and promote.
„Today we remember the outstanding personalities of Roma ethnicity who participated in the development of modern Romania, who backed the country’s ideals and made significant contributions to the national cultural heritage. The celebration of the Roma ethnicity is both an expression of appreciation for the contribution of the Roma to society, and an occasion to assess the progress made in combating the xenophobic discourse and in reducing the social and economic inequalities that still affect the Roma community. On the way to a more united and inclusive Europe, Romania can be a good example of an open and democratic society, including through the diversity, energies and skills of its Roma citizens. Many happy returns to the entire Roma community in Romania!,” President Iohannis notes in the conclusion of his message.
