Romania could become first country from Black Sea to start offshore wind energy production(minister)

Romania has prospects of becoming the first country from the Black Sea to start offshore wind energy production and the target is that, until 2032, Romanians will benefit from the energy produced in the Black Sea, with an installed power of at least 3GW, the Minister of Energy claims, Sebastian Burduja.

At the Global Offshore Wind Alliance (GOWA) meeting in New York, Sebastian Burduja discussed Romania’s integration into the club of countries that produce or will produce offshore wind energy.

„We are working closely with international partners such as the US State Department and the European Commission to take the necessary steps to develop this sector, which is important for the energy security of our country and the entire region. We emphasized the prospects of becoming the first country on the Black Sea to start offshore wind energy production. Our goal, included in the Energy Strategy we are working on, is for Romanians to benefit from the energy produced in the Black Sea, with an installed power of at least 3GW,” the Energy Minister wrote on Facebook on Wednesday.

He specified that one of the most important things „in this mandate” was the adoption of the law for the production of wind energy in the Black Sea. „We are really on the radar of the world’s major investors, taking into account the World Bank study, which shows that Romania has a huge potential of up to 76GW in wind power plants in the Black Sea”, said Burduja.

The responsible minister also showed that, in 2025, the Government proposed to complete the study on the optimal locations for offshore wind turbines, ensuring both energy efficiency and compliance with environmental protection standards.

„We also highlighted our efforts to build modern and flexible networks, capable of integrating both wind energy and nuclear energy. Maintaining the balance in the national energy system is a priority, and infrastructure modernization is the key to achieving this goal,” Burduja also said.

According to him, at the meeting he also spoke about the launch of the first tender for Contracts for Difference, which aims to finance new renewable energy production capacities. „This is another PNRR milestone that we have reached. This year we will finance 1,500 MW, and we will add another 3,500 MW next year,” mentioned Burduja.

The Minister of Energy showed that Romania aims to ensure its energy security and independence and to become a leader on the European renewable energy market. „We have the resources and, above all, the necessary vision to capitalize on the opportunities in front of us. We just have to continue,” Burduja concluded his post.
