Romania could produce its own military drones by the end of this year, and in approximately two and a half years the production of explosive powder for weapons will begin, sources from the defense field say.
There are also advanced discussions for the production of 155 mm caliber ammunition through the Foreign Military Financing mechanism of the United States, but also in Romania.
The new defense financing mechanism prepared at EU level „will create the opportunity for Romania to develop new production capacities”, the sources say.
The estimate is that this year, Romania will continue to improve its defense infrastructure and will allocate a significant part of the Defense budget for acquisitions and modernization. It is a clear commitment that Romania will exceed the minimum recommended threshold of 20% for procurement, by allocating 30%, thus consolidating the capabilities of its armed forces and strengthening national and regional security.
As a beneficiary of products developed by the national or European defense industry, the Defense Ministry can declare its interest in including the domestic defense industry in global supply chains, especially at present, „when there are EU financial incentives to cooperate with other member states, in order to consolidate the European technological and industrial base”, the same sources inform.
