Romania emphasizes serious impact generated by Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine at Francophonie Summit

Romania emphasized the serious impact on security and stability at the regional and global level generated by Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine, as well as the Republic of Moldova’s particularly vulnerable situation in this context, within the works the Francophonie Summit, according to Agerpres.

Presidential Adviser Sergiu Nistor, the Francophonie representative of the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, led the Romanian delegation that participated in the 18th Summit of Heads of State and Government members of La Francophonie, organised on Djerba Island in southern Tunisia, November 19 to 20, with the theme „Connectivity in diversity: Digital as a vector of development and solidarity in the Francophone space”.

The event was attended by heads of state and government, ministers of foreign affairs and high-level representatives from the 88 member states and governments, 54 full members, 7 associate members and 27 observers, of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF).

During the discussions on the political and security situation in the Francophone area, the challenges to democracy and human rights, Romania emphasized the serious impact on security and stability at the regional and global level, including in the Francophone area, generated by the military aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, as well as the particularly vulnerable situation in which the Republic of Moldova finds itself as a result of this conflict, and highlighted the importance of international solidarity in imposing respect for the fundamental principles of international law and the UN Charter, informs a pres release sent on Sunday by the Administration Presidential.

According to the cited source, in the context of the current conflicts that are corroding the international order, affecting the great Francophone family, the Representative of the President of Romania emphasized the need to urgently address the problems posed by the risk of manipulation and the spread of false information, disinformation and narratives on social networks in the Francophone digital space.

Presidential Adviser Sergiu Nistor also highlighted Romania’s solid contribution to the promotion of the French language and Francophone values, underlining the active commitment of our country in international cooperation and development assistance in the Francophone area, by financing programs carried out in Francophone Africa countries or in the OIF member states in Central and Eastern Europe. The Representative of the President of Romania for the Francophonie highlighted the continuation of the main flagship programmes of the Francophonie, carried out by Romania, such as the program of doctoral and posdoctoral scholarships „Eugene Ionescu” or the course intended for officers who will work within the framework of the UN peacekeeping operations carried out in the Francophone areas.

The Djerba Declaration adopted at the 18th 18th Summit of the Francophonie outlines the future orientations of Francophonie in the digital field, the Declaration on the French Language, the Resolution on crisis situations in the Francophone space, as well as the Strategic Framework of Francophonie 2023-2030.

At the same time, Rwanda’s Louise Mushikiwabo was re-elected Secretary General Of La Francophonie, for a new four-year term. Conveying congratulations and best wishes for success in the new mandate on behalf of President Klaus Iohannis, Presidential Advisor Sergiu Nistor expressed his hope that Mrs. Louise Mushikiwabo will also participate in the event celebrating the 30th anniversary of Romania’s presence in the OIF, which will take place next year, in Bucharest, mentions the cited press release.
