Romania on Monday had the lowest electricity prices in its region and the third lowest in the European Union, the Energy Ministry reported.
The prices for electricity to be delivered on Monday, April 29, on the SPOT markets of the member countries place Romania in the top of the countries with the lowest prices, according to the ministry.
Thus, with almost half of the electricity coming from solar and wind resources during daylight hours, the average price recorded in Romania was EUR 55/ MWh, with only Sweden and Finland reporting lower prices.

We often look at the energy model and prices in Spain or Portugal and today Romania has cheaper electricity than the two countries due to the contribution brought by green energy to the national energy mix. We have put to work EUR 18 billion for investment in energy, placing Romania on a path to energy independence, with clean energy at fair prices for households and companies alike. By accelerating investment and having a well-defined strategy and actions, we managed to obtain Eurostat’s confirmation that Romania is among the countries with the lowest prices paid by the population for electricity and natural gas,” Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja is quoted as saying in a press statement released by the ministry.
Eurostat has recently published statistics on the prices paid for electricity and natural gas by household and non-household consumers in the European Union (EU). In the second half of 2023, Romania had the third lowest residential prices for natural gas and the fifth lowest for electricity.
The ministry also said that on April 25 it released two calls for projects from the Modernisation Fund under Key Programme 1 – Renewable energy resources and energy storage – Supporting investment in new facilities to produce electricity from renewable resources for self-consumption and supporting investment in new facilities to produce electricity from renewable resources for projects regarding government-run companies and corporations. The total budget allocated for the two calls is EUR 815 million.
