The Ministry of Internal Affairs reported on Tuesday, citing information released on a crowd-sourced global database of quality of life data, that Romania is among the countries with a low level of crime.

„Data available on https://www.numbeo.com, one of the most well-known online platforms that collects data provided by citizens around the world regarding their perception of safety and crime levels in certain countries and cities, places Romania among the countries with a low level of crime and a high level of safety, globally. Europe-wide, Romania is perceived by the citizens as a safer country than states such as France, Great Britain, Italy, Germany, Hungary or Norway,” the Ministry of Internal Affairs said.

According to the cited source, the main crime indicators, including the general rate of crime, thefts and burglaries, robberies and muggings, car thefts and violent crimes are considered by citizens to be at a low level, proving a „very good” level of safety.

„Data on numbeo.com confirms the most recent international reports, such as that of the U.S. State Department, which highlight the progress made by Romania in the field of public safety, placing it among the safest states in the European Union,” emphasized the Ministry, adding that Bucharest is safer than other European capitals.

The Romanian capital city is credited with a safety index score of 71.9, surpassing other European capitals such as Paris, London, Athens, Dublin, Rome, Sofia and Berlin in this regard. Of the 150 European cities included in the ranking, the safety index score ranges from 33.3 (the least safe city) to 81.3 (the safest), the Ministry of the Interior said.

The people who contributed data to numbeo.com reported feeling a high level of confidence that they were safe when walking alone on the street in Romania at night, the statement said. By comparison, the nighttime safety rating in Greece, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Norway, Spain, Norway, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland was classified as moderate, and low in France.

Numbeo is an online database that provides statistics for cost of living, safety and crime rates, health, pollution, traffic and quality of life in various cities and countries around the world. The platform is constantly updated through user contributions and offers a perspective based on the real experiences of residents, explained the Ministry of the Interior.
