The Government approved the memorandum regarding the establishment of the Romanian Committee for Artificial Intelligence, which will include a scientific and ethics council in artificial intelligence, an education council and thematic working groups, Minister of Research, Innovation and Digitization Sebastian Burduja stated, according to Agerpres.

„It is an umbrella framework which, practically, will concentrate all the forces in society that want to think about the future and this framework of artificial intelligence in Romania. It will include a scientific and ethics council in artificial intelligence, an artificial intelligence education council, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, and thematic working groups,” Minister Sebastian Burduja told a press conference on Friday, held at the Victoria Palace.

Furthermore, he added that the demarche also aims to strengthen the Romanian artificial intelligence hub.

„It is a predefined project, funded in the future Competitiveness Operational Programme – POCIDIF [Intelligent Growth, Digitization and Financial Instruments Operational Programme]. And, last but not least, we aim to connect the great specialists that Romania has in artificial intelligence, in machine learning, to the great universities, research laboratories, companies, around the world, with academia, research, artificial intelligence, back home,” Burduja stated.

He underscored that the demarche will be 100 percent open to the contributions of civil society, the academia, the private environment, practically aligning Romania with the best practices in the area.

„Romania is, unfortunately, among the last European countries that are thinking of making a national strategy for artificial intelligence. We have time to catch up, but it is not necessarily a bad thing, because we can learn from the mistakes of others and come up with a framework for very good artificial intelligence,” Sebastian Burduja also said.

He stated that the completion of the entities included in the Committee shall be done through minister order.
