An exchange of views with an emphasis on the accession process of Romania to the Schengen area, the state of bilateral relations, as well as current issues on the international and security agenda are the topics addressed by the minister of Foreign Affairs, Bogdan Aurescu, in a telephone conversation with his Estonian counterpart, Urmas Reinsalu, according to a Foreign Ministry (MAE) press release sent to Agerpres.

Minister Aurescu „conveyed his special appreciation for Estonia’s constant support for Romania’s accession to the Schengen area and presented our country’s steps towards achieving this goal, highlighting the recent discussions he held in this regard with the Austrian, with the Swedish Presidency of the EU Council and with counterparts from most of the member states”.

Minister Urmas Reinsalu reiterated „Estonia’s solid and firm support for Romania’s accession to the Schengen area and assured that Romania can count on Estonia’s full availability to continue an active dialogue with other European partners on this subject”.

Reinsalu thanked for the resumption of Romania’s participation, starting this year, in the air police missions in the Baltic Sea region, as part of the allied collective effort to ensure the security of the Eastern Flank.

The two also had an exchange of views regarding the perspective of the NATO enlargement process through the accession of Sweden and Finland, which both countries actively support, including through diplomatic efforts, the MAE informs.

The worrisome security developments determined by Russia’s aggression in Ukraine were also addressed, the two ministers stressing the importance of coordination within international organizations, as part of efforts to support Kyiv and deter the aggressor state.
